Adriana Zabala named DISTINGUISHED VOCAL ARTIST
THE AMERICAN PRIZE

This award is given to honor "sustained artistic excellence over an extended period of time," but I would like to acknowlege the role of the premiere of The Trial of Susan B. Anthony, but Steven Mark Kohn (and for which he was also awarded an American Prize!) in the conferrring of this honor.

Release of the premiere recording of Steal A Pencil For Me with Opera Colorado
Gerald Cohen, Composer/ Deborah Breevoort, Librettist

Steal a Pencil for Me is an opera in two acts about one of the Holocaust’s most unusual love stories—between Jaap Polak and Ina Soep, who fell in love while imprisoned in the Westerbork and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps. Based on their letters, the opera is about the indestructibility of the life spirit and the power of humankind to survive adversity, dramatizing intimate concerns and private dramas alongside the epic horrors of the Holocaust. Ms. Zabala portrays Manja Polak, Jaaps first wife and fellow prisoner.

Steven Mark Kohn has written a moving, incisive, wistful, witty, and timely dramatic account of the trial of one the great champions and key figures in the Women's Suffrage movement in the U.S, Susan B. Anthony. E. Schirmer published the score in May of 2020, and I am privileged that Steve has made me the dedicatee.
